Dutas 0.5 mg capsules contain Dutasteride and are used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate) and male pattern hair loss. Dutas 0.5 mg capsules inhibit the formation of the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is associated with prostate enlargement and hair loss.
What Is Dutas Used For?
Dutas 0.5 mg capsules are used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate). They help shrink the prostate and reduce the risk of urinary retention caused by restricted urine flow due to prostate enlargement. Improving BPH symptoms with Dutas 0.5 mg capsules may also reduce the need for surgery.
Dutas 0.5 mg capsules may be used alone or together with other medicines, such as alpha blockers, to treat BPH.
As an effect related to its intended use, Dutas 0.5 mg capsules are also used to treat male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, by promoting hair growth and helping prevent further hair loss on all areas of the scalp, including the front hairline. This may help reverse baldness in men with mild to moderate hair loss, but it will not restore hair that has been lost for a long time. Dutas 0.5 mg capsules are not used to treat hair loss in women.
How Does Dutas Work?
Dutas 0.5 mg capsules contain 0.5 mg of Dutasteride, which specifically inhibits both forms of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, Type I and Type II. This enzyme converts the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which is the main androgen responsible for the development and growth of the prostate.
DHT also causes benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate. Dutas 0.5 mg capsules reduce DHT levels in the blood, so the prostate in men with BPH is no longer stimulated to grow, allowing the enlarged prostate to shrink.
DHT is also present in hair follicles and is one of the androgens responsible for hair loss. It causes hair follicles in the scalp to gradually shrink, producing smaller and thinner hairs, and eventually no hair grows from the follicles. Dutas 0.5 mg capsules may reverse the hair loss process by preventing DHT from building up in scalp hair follicles, allowing hair to grow normally.

What Are the Side Effects of Dutas?
Dutas 0.5 mg capsules are generally well tolerated, but side effects may still occur. These are usually mild and may include temporary impotence during continued treatment and reduced sexual desire.
Less common side effects include breast tenderness or enlargement in men, also known as gynecomastia, and itchy skin rash.
When Should Dutas Not Be Used?
You should not use Dutas 0.5 mg capsules if:
You are a woman. Dutas is not suitable for women and may harm an unborn baby.
You are allergic to Dutas or any other medicine containing Dutasteride.
You are taking medicines that may interact with Dutas and increase the risk of side effects, including verapamil or diltiazem for high blood pressure; ritonavir or indinavir for HIV; itraconazole or ketoconazole for fungal infections; or nefazodone, an antidepressant.
How Should Dutas Be Taken?
Take Dutas 0.5 mg capsules once daily, with or without food, with a glass of water, as directed by your doctor. Treatment may continue for 6 months or longer.
Do not chew or open the capsule, as this may cause soreness in your mouth or throat.
How Long Should Dutas Be Taken?
Continue taking Dutas 0.5 mg capsules as recommended by your doctor. Treatment may last 3 months or longer.
New hair may take several months to grow. If you stop taking Dutas 0.5 mg capsules during this period, hair loss may return.
Dutas 0.5 mg capsules may take 6 months or longer to improve BPH symptoms because the prostate shrinks slowly. If you stop taking Dutas during this period, your prostate may start to grow again.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Dutas 0.5 mg capsules, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose.
Do not take a double dose.
Storage
Keep Dutas 0.5 mg capsules in the blister pack. Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight.
